2009-10-14: Tech's Lannan to Speak at NEBRA Conference

Tech Environmental's Vice President, Michael T. Lannan, P.E., will be giving a presentation at the 2009 Annual Northeast Residuals, Biosolids & Energy Conference on Thursday, November 5, 2009.

Mr. Lannan's presentation is entitled "Food Residuals: An Energy Source Processed by a Good Neighbor," and is based on his experiences as an odor control consultant to food-waste-to-energy projects around New England.

Many states have expressed the desire to remove pre-consumer and/or post-consumer food waste from the solid waste stream. Approximately 26% of today's waste could be diverted in this manner. The best way to achieve this goal is through source separation - the establishment of special dumpsters for food waste at major production facilities, and dumpsters at transfer stations where residents could deposit food waste for free, much as they deposit recyclables today. If this waste was diverted to a food-waste-to-energy facility that was able to charge tipping fees, profitably gain energy from digestion, obtain renewable-energy credits, and create a beneficial-reuse product, such facilities could become profitable and provide a free-market solution to the food waste concern.

This paper will discuss the benefits of the food-waste-to-energy process and the steps necessary to ensure that these facilities will be good neighbors, benefiting their communities while avoiding odorous conditions.
