2009-05-08: Tech Demystifies Fugitive LFG Emissions
BOLTON LANDING, NY - Tech Environmental's Michael T. Lannan, Marc C. Wallace, Dana C. Buske and Andrew J. Beaton delivered a presentation to the New York Federation of Solid Waste Associations' annual conference on May 4, 2009. The presentation discussed a series of "Landfill Gas Fugitive Emission ÂFactors," as part of a session on the topic of "Demystifying Capture Efficiency."
The presentation began by addressing the lack of scientific basis for the "default capture efficiency" of 75% for landfill gas collection systems, a number presented in the USEPA's AP-42 document governing solid waste facilities. Mr. Lannan, Tech's Vice President, opened the presentation by addressing the lack of data underlying this figure, and discussed the ways in which this default factor negatively impacts state-of-the-art facilities in the court of public opinion.

The presentation then delved into several factors unique to each landfill that mitigate fugitive landfill gas emissions. Mr. Wallace, a meteorologist, discussed the impact that weather and climate have on fugitive emissions. Mr. Beaton described the balancing effect that landfills using modern tools and techniques can harness to limit fugitive emissions. Dr. Buske introduced the benefits of biofiltration and detailed the ways in which a landfill essentially works as a biofilter. Mr. Lannan discussed the mitigating effects of landfill cover via a series of studies that demonstrated that closed landfill cells, when capped and managed properly, can have very low Â;fugitive emissions. you best watch

A paper written by the four presenters will appear in an upcoming issue of MSW Management magazine, and Dr. Buske will be delivering a presentation relating to this paper at SWANA's 14th Annual Landfill Symposium in Savannah, GA this June.
